India’s premiere research organization, the Indian Space and Research Organisation (ISRO) is planning to build a dedicated satellite to facilitate satellite-based communication directly from India instead of being routed through foreign countries.
A communications satellite (sometimes abbreviated to COMSAT) is an artificial satellite stationed in space for the purpose of telecommunications. Modern communications satellites use a variety of orbits including geostationary orbits, Molniya orbits, other elliptical orbits and low (polar and non-polar) Earth orbits.
“We are yet to make an impact on satellite-based mobile communication. But again there are plans to evolve such systems,” said former ISRO chairman, Mr G. Madhavan Nair. “Designs are evolved. They (ISRO) are in the process of building the satellite,” he added.
According to Mr. Nair such a satellite maybe available in a year or two. The planned satellite will be designed to work in the S-band transponder.
